Consuming the world’s capital

This past Saturday was Overshoot day, an event established to describe how fast we humans consume Earth’s natural resources. This is the point of time every year when we have used up the stock of renewable assets. Or in economic terms: Now we have exceeded our budget, spent the whole year’s salary and start living on loans.

This means that everything humanity produces or consumes the rest of this year is above the limit of what Earth’s eco systems can take in the long run.
– In less than nine months we spend resources that it takes nature twelve months to recreate. If everyone lived as the Swedes we would need almost three globes, says Carina Borgström-Hansson from the World Wide Fund for Nature.

Until abour 30 years ago, humanity’s consumption and Earth’s annual production were in balance. But now we just seem to be speeding up the pace. Last year Overshoot day came on the 25:th of September. (There’s “normally” about four or five days of difference each year. The sudden jump this year isn’t due to any sudden change in human demand but rather to better calculation methods, says Global Footprint Network, the organisation behind the calculations)

But Carina Borgström-Hansson hasn’t given up.
– We have the knowledge as well as the technology to achieve smart solutions required for attractive and sustainable lifestyles that can fit into this planet’s frames. What’s needed is the will and political action, she says.

Right now the election campaigns are starting to reach their peaks, as we will have national elections here in Sweden the 19:th of September. I’m eagerly awaiting the different parties’ proposals for how we can get below the Overshoot limit again.

Who knows, this economic crisis situation that lasts already for 2 years should have at least somewhat reduced this capital consumption, because the economic activity, spending and travelling is now (i think) in most parts of the world significantly reduced (-5% to -10% ?), which should be somewhere visible.

It is often stated in the literature about the world oil crises in the 1970′s, that reforms were made in adopting less consuming and cleaner technologies and reorganising industries. That means the industries and pollution in that period should have been reduced (about 30 years ago), at least to some point in time. At the other hand, today some actually state the roots of our present crises and unsuistainability (perhaps in other sense) started developing from that period, with different path for developing and developed world, at least before 1990′s. (?)

One of the main factor that induced economic (and consequently social and political) crises in ex. Yugoslavia (as well as in many other developing countries in the world) started in the middle of that period (late 1970′s, early 1980′s), because these countries have just prior lended money and started investing in classical (dirtier) industries which soon failed to enable growth and development. In the same time the credits and interest rates had to be payed back (to the west) and consequently it drew them (us) only into ever more misery. It is morover strange, because somewhere in the 1960′s ex. Yugoslavia had one of the fastest growth and development rate in the world (comparable to that of Japan).

But it seems, everything had to be linked with then Cold War “games” too. The question is of course on what (political) game, if any, we depend today (?).

Absolutely, the economic crisis seem to have an effect on our consumption. But at the same time the Earth’s population continues to grow, which makes this question even more tricky.

What is more interesting to me (and also encouraging) is that despite only 9 million inhabitants Sweden has succeded to build and maintain a very diverse, modern and complex industry – from automotive, shipbuilding, to aerospace, naming just few. Building software succesfully is also a nice point, but it seems to me this kind of activity is given to much credit, only because it is something new. …
