Climate concert goes live on the web

artistsRecently I heard the Swedish singer-songwriter Ane Brun tell the story about how she started to take climate change seriously. For long she hadn’t wanted to think about the issue, she said, avoiding films such as Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth”. But when a friend of hers suddenly started to show his personal and very emotional engagement in what will happen to the world if we continue to warm it up, the issue came closer.

After attending the Tällberg Forum summit a couple of years ago it all fell into place, she said. But it wasn’t a very harmonious feeling. Rather like wanting to run out on every street and city square, shouting about her worries and fears.

In a way, this is actually what she decided to do. At the international day of action for the “350 goal” last year she gathered an impressive crowd of Swedish top artists to give a marathon concert during 350 minutes.

The initiative “No more lullabies” has the goal to break through the mechanisms that make both individuals and societies close their eyes, and inspire conversations on climate change through music and poetry – beyond political rhetoric, defensive reactions and self-interest.
“It’s time to wake up. We need no more lullabies.”, they write.

And their work to make these messages come through with the help of culture continues. Yesterday and today Ane Brun and several other great Swedish artists give free concerts in one of Stockholm’s parks, as a part of the annual park theater arrangements.

But the concerts aren’t just for those of us who happen to be in Stockholm this evening – anyone can follow them on the Internet, live streamed on Tällberg Foundations home page.

The concert starts at seven o’clock tonight. Enjoy!

I’ve managed to watch and listen only for a 10 minutes or so, but alltogether i have an impression like swedes starts really talking when they are singing. It is very beatifull and clear way of communication, and very relaxing too.

  • Sara Jeswani

Yes, there was a lot of talking during the first part, to explain the ideas behind the project. But I hope you got to hear some of the music too! Anyway happy you liked it.

Well, i didn’t understood much of talking (or better to say 99% of it). I hope one day to learn swedish, but for the most part this will depend on the real need and future possibilities for the more direct contact with the swedish people, culture and country. …

One problem in that sense was that the camera was constantly pointed at the stage (covered with picture of eyes), while you coudn’t see what was happening around and develop that sense of being the part of there present(real) public. … The music i liked and i was impressed with the quality and poolish of the instruments. No one can’t sing so clear and beatifull without really believe in what it is doing and experience it every day as true, which is an important message (even subconoscious) too.

The songs and sharing of the experience has really impressive and calming effect, perhaps even like some lullabies would have on little children as well. But of course, far more truthfull than those one opposed in the titlle.

  • Sara Jeswani

Yes, it’s a pity you couldn’t see all the people in the audience! I was there, taken by the atmosphere. And you have an important point about the message coming through, although subconscious. With issues so serious and sometimes painful as global warming, words can sometimes just be in the way. In that sense culture has an important role in bringing out the emotional aspects of it all.
