One of the highlights of December besides Christmas is the celebration of Saint Lucia Day. Kids and adults alike wearing crowns of light and dressed in flowing white robes add an ethereal presence to the cold dark winter.

Stockholm has a sizable Thai and Southeast Asian community; many of whom bring along their traditions, cultures, and religions. Though I consider myself a practicing Christian, I have friends who actively practice other religions. I was recently at one of my Thai friends for dinner and she invited me into her Buddhist prayer room.

Celebrating All Saints’ Day (Alla helgons dag) yesterday, thousands of people were out in full force with thousands of candles, flowers, and other mementos in hand to pay respect to departed loved ones and honor the dead at Skogskyrkogården (“Woodland Cemetary”), also a UNESCO World Heritage site.

This time around, I decided to skip out on Sweden’s stinky tradition – fermented herring (surströmming) – even though I’ve tried it three times before. As for my husband, he always digs in like it’s the sweetest thing ever invented.
