Festivals Festivals!

Hello there,

Time has come for this blog to get a little well-earned holiday. To go fishing, camping, swimming. Eat pickled herring, drink snaps, hang out at Ingmar Bergman’s Fårö. Dance around naked singing the Wicker Man theme.
You know, Swede stuff.

But before that, let’s figure out which festivals to attend! I’m playing live at some and DJing at others, but really I think I’d go either way because in recent years Swedish festivals have really stepped up their game.
There are more of them and they aim a lot higher. They are bigger (or smaller) and better. (And sometimes faster and harder but I don’t go to those).

Just take Gothenburg’s Way Out West for example. It was recently chosen by Time Out Magazine as one of the five hottest festivals in Europe. And with Prince, Kanye West and Robyn topping the bill, who can blame them?

Aside from Way Out West, here are a few other ones you shouldn’t miss – and some (Swedish) reasons as to why not:

Peace And Love
28 June – 2 july, Borlänge

Go there for:
Oskar Linnros, Lykke Li, Those Dancing Days

(And if you want it translated, go here for a recent cover of that very song, in English by Magnus Carlsson and The Moon Quartet. And them you can see live at Hultsfred, below).

Non Swede-bonus: Oh, and Bob Dylan is coming….

Putte i Parken
6-9 Juli, Karlskoga

Also, listen to a brand new and very pretty song by Kristian Matsson (TTMOE) here. Judging by the lyrics the song may be called There Is No Leaving Now (but There Is No Way Of Knowing That For Sure).

Emmaboda
27-30 July

This remains the indie festival to end all indie festivals.
It’s a lovely little thing and usually a great place to catch bands early.

Popagandafestivalen
26-27 August, Eriksdalsbadet Stockholm

This is one of my favourites. We played last year and it’s just so nice and civilized and always a brilliant lineup. Not to mention it’s in my home town!

Go there for:
(More bands to be announced but Swedes confirmed so far are) Lykke Li and Those Dancing Days.

That’s all for now. So long folks, I might see you in a Swedish forest soon but until then I’ll leave you with this and my wishes for a wonderful summer for each and all!

Welcome, to you and me both.

So, hey, welcome, to you and me both. I am Lisa and I shall be your guide to Swedish music for an unknown amount of time to come.

I should be something of an authority on Swedish music, really – seeing how I am Swedish and make music.

And yet with each passing day I run into more and more British, American, Canadian, French and Indonesian people who know a lot more on the subject than I do. (We call them swedophiles – and so do they I think?!)

It’s like Swedish music has become a genre all in itself. A way of life almost. At least a seal of approval to a lot of people.

If it’s Swedish it’s good.

So, having said all that it is on somewhat shaky legs I take on this daunting task…

To ease into things I’ll start by digging where I stand. Which is with my own band, The Concretes, and this little well-timed fact: We play a show in Stockholm on Saturday. The first in a while and also the perfect opportunity for me to tell you about three Swedish acts and one music venue…

The venue is Slakthuset (tube-station Globen) which is brand new and, judging by bookings thus far, a name worth remembering.

Its opening also follows the current trend of venues and clubs thinking outside the box – if the box is inner-city Stockholm and outside it is the suburbs.

To name but a few there is also Pluto, Kruthuset, Lilla Ukraina, FärgfabrikenRestaurang Landet and (yes to be fair, on the edge of town but stillUnder Bron/Trädgården, all of them popular venues (or club nights) offering a variety of clubs, DJs and live sets on a regular basis.

Anyways, also playing live on Saturday is Den Svenska Björnstammen, an electronic pop group from Norrköping.

DJing are well-known Swedish music journalist Fredrik Strage, and (at least one half of) much blog-loved balearic duo Korallreven – the love child of another Swedish music journalist, Marcus Joons, and Daniel Tjäder, member of one of Sweden’s very finest, The Radio Dept.

And on top of all this, Saturday is also Walpurgis (Valborg in Swedish) night, but if you’re unfamiliar with this tradition I am afraid I have to leave it up to a differently themed blog to fill you in on that.

So, I might see you this weekend or I’ll see you here again very shortly.

Happy Walpurgis and please treat yourselves to some music.

xx

ÅÄÖ Day five : The Concretes & Pacific!

Back at Le Point Ephémère for the last evening of the festival. Two last but not least concerts!
First with The Concretes who gave us their disco-pop songs on high heels. A compact and efficient set.
Then Pacific! has arrived in their black hoodies supported by Sarah Assbring (El Perro Del Mar) on vocals. A great symbiosis of the band and their singer for a show that take us progressively to climb up their dark blue waves. A great end for these five days of concerts.

Finally, a great second edition of this ÅÄÖ festival! Balanced with newcomers like Prince of Assyria and Anna Von Hausswolff or confirmed talents such as Frida Hyvönen or Jay Jay Johanson. The good times spent on stage was also on the crowd as all the artists were obviously happy to play and to share this pleasure with the Parisian audience. Already finished!? We want more!!
