Sweeping With Swedish Soul

I’m painting my room today. The current color is an apricot/pinkish fade, not really my favorite. And since my window is pretty small I’m hoping to bring in some light with white paint. And you know what they say about spring : “In With The New”.

From my lap top I’m blasting a new discovery on the Swedish soul scene: Oskar Linnros. An absolutely amazing singer who is foremost, known as the rapper of Swedish duo Snook, who made Swedes dance to tunes such as Mister Cool, Snook, svett och tårar and Längst fram i taxin a few years back. Linnros is also part of Swedish electro/hiphop group Maskinen and wrote music for artists such as Veronica Maggio and Petter.

Linnros is now back with a eponymous solo project. His first single Ack Sundyberg is an ode to Sundbyberg, a suburb to Stockholm.  His music is funky mix of classic soul, polished beats and raw lyrics – just my type of music.

The track has been on repeat all afternoon, and I’m not planning to stop :)

Whether its the white paint or the brilliant Swedish soul my room definitely feels a lot brighter.

The Tallest Man On Earth

The number one source for independent music, Pitchfork, announces Swedish acoustic folk/pop act The Tallest Man On Earth as Best New Music in their review on this charming singer’s latest album The Wild hunt released by Deadsound March 1, 2010.

The sound of Tallest Man On Heart witnesses a strong passion for fellow singer Bob Dylan. Tallest Man On Earth’s amazing finger pickings skill takes his guitar playing to a pretty exciting level, his intimate tunes and heartbreaking lyrics lasts in my heart forever. Tallest Man On Earth has been renowned in music blogs and magazines from everywhere, Brooklyn Vegan, Paste Magazine NPR to name a few. And the Dylan associations never stop.

But just like my fellow music bloggers are claiming, the Dylan thingm is in this particular case never gets too much. Yes, are there way too many emerging artists out there that constantly pull the Dylan card, but rarely with any success. Swedish Kristian Mattson aka Tallest Man On Earth does, however.

The journey just started for Tallest Man On Earth, and already his concerts gets sold out and music blogs are digging his music so for Mattson, age 27 from Dalarna in Sweden – it’s about to get one helluva ride.

Here’s a live video of his sold out performance in New York City at Highline Ballroom April 22, 2010.

Fibes Oh Fibes in The City

Last week The Swede Beat Magazine c0-hosted the showcase of soul-rockers Fibes Oh Fibes from Gothenburg in Sweden. The gig was at Whiteslab Palace, the Swedish owned bar that I have previously been hosting parties at. The location, a classy bar that serves an eclectic menu of Toast Skagen, salmon and dishes with herring, is pretty cool. The room behind the kitchen for gigs, DJ set and of course, dancing is definitely the best part.

That’s were I hanged out Wednesday night with handful of 100 people who came to see the band. Funny thing was, most of us were Swedes. In fact the Swedish clientele was so many that after the show people shouted:

En gang till! En gang till”

(One more time! One more time! – in Swedish.)

Fibes Oh Fibes gig was a funky one, delivering great soul/rock in high falsetto.  The crowd loved it, turned out to be a pretty good night.

My favorite was the power ballad dedicated to my biggest love: New York City.
