Last year, the SI Alumni in Tanzania had a unique event at the University of Dar es Salaam from 21st to 22nd December 2015. The theme of the two-day event was ‘Applying free and open source software to enhance research capacity and e-learning in Tanzania’. Initially, the SI Alumni event in Dar es Salaam was planned to be done in one day. However, following a kind request and support from the University of Dar es Salaam (Directorate of Knowledge Exchange), the SI Alumni agreed to organize the event for two days so as to share their knowledge and skills on application of free and open source software to more than 40 Masters and PhD students from different academic institutions in Tanzania. The SI event in Dar es Salaam was organized in collaboration with the Swedish Embassy in Tanzania and the Directorate of Knowledge Exchange, Centre for Continuing Education at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM). The Guest of Honour at the event was the Deputy Vice Chancellor-Research and Knowledge Exchange (DVC-RKE) at the University of Dar es Salaam, Prof. C.Z.M. Kimambo. Other invited guests were Mr. Ludvig Bontell who attended the event as the acting Swedish Ambassador to Tanzania, also a representative from the Swedish Embassy in Tanzania, Prof. Charles Lugomela, Director-Knowledge Exchange at the University of Dar es Salaam (Swedish Alumnus) and Dr. Kokuberwa Katunzi-Mollel, coordinator, Centre for Continuing Education at the University of Dar es Salaam. The Tanzania-Sweden Alumni Network launch event was held on Wednesday, 1st July 2015 at the Swedish Residence, Dar es Salaam. Around 100 alumni attended, including universities’ representatives, Tanzanian government representatives, Swedish Embassy staff and other guests.
The event was hosted by the Swedish Ambassador, His Excellency, Lennarth Hjelmaker and officiated by the Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Finance, Adolf Mkenda, who is a graduate from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. The Swedish Institute Alumni Network in Uganda together with the Swedish Institute and the Embassy of Sweden in Uganda has the pleasure of inviting you to the first Regional SI Alumni Forum event. The event will take place in Uganda from 6-8 August 2015 at the Imperial Beach Botanical Hotel Entebbe.
SI alumni from Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Zambia, Malawi and Ethiopia will attend the event. Speakers include the Ambassador of Sweden, H.E. Urban Andersson, delegates from the Swedish Institute, the Embassy of Sweden in Uganda, Swedish/local Companies in the region, and SI alumni.
The Regional SI Alumni Forum is held on the theme of Entrepreneurship. The programme will tentatively include presentations on the following topics:
- “The Entrepreneurial spirit in an emerging East African Community: The Swedish contribution”
- “Integration, Governance/ Leadership and Business: A tripod approach “
- “How to succeed as an Entrepreneur in East Africa: A success story from the region”
Participants will also get to make study visits to three companies. There will be plenty of opportunities for networking with participating SI alumni.

1 for Rwanda (full transport and accommodation)
10 for Ugandan participants who can attend the event for one day on 7 August.

On 12 December 2014, SI Alumni in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, under the coordination of Elikana Kalumanga and Nacky Sinda, organised an Alumni Event with the theme ‘ICT and e-solutions using free and open source software in different fields: Experiences from the SI Alumni in Tanzania’. The event in Dar es Salaam was organized in collaboration with the Swedish Embassy in Tanzania and the Directorate of Knowledge Exchange, Centre for Continuing Education at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM). SI Alumni Elikana Kalumanga and Nack Sinda are hereby inviting all Swedish Institute Alumni living in Dar es Salaam and around to attend an SI Alumni Event in Dar es Salaam on 12 December 2014. The event is organized to facilitate the SI Alumni network in Tanzania and share ICT knowledge and experience between SI Alumni and other Tanzanians pursuing postgraduate studies. We intend to fight the slogan and reality that ‘Any unshared knowledge will get lost in time’.
