On 11 and 13 April respectively, the Embassy in Beijing and the Consulate in Shanghai hosted students accepted to study in Sweden for pre-departure events. The events targeted Chinese students who have been accepted to one of eight Swedish universities. The universities participated either with representatives in China or through video conference, and conveyed important information to the potential students, as well as answered questions. Two exciting events have taken place in Shanghai:
Lunar January 15, the first full moon day in a year, is regarded as reunion moment for all family members and friends in China.
On Sunday December 13, Swedish St Lucia Day was celebrated at the Christmas Fair of the Shanghai Center. A Swedish-Chinese Lucia procession with singing and candlelight was held for the hundreds of people including around 30 Swedish alumni that had gathered. The event was organized by the Consulate General of Sweden in Shanghai with Swedish and local partners aiming to bring Swedish traditions to Shanghai and to celebrate the end of the United Nations year of light. SI Alumnus Ye Tian from China received a grant from SI in 2014 to organise an alumni event in Beijing on cross-cultural communication. Due to various circumstances the event was delayed but on 12 March the event was finally held at the Embassy of Sweden in Beijing. Please find Ye Tian’s report below:
The event finally took place with the Embassy’s help! After we published an event notice to members of the Sweden Alumni Network in China (SANC), and the Embassy of Sweden published a notice via its official Weibo and WeChat, we received over 100 applications from people in different companies and many new SANC members. Considering that we gave a really short notice, only about one week, it was really a happy surprise for us to see these many applications. In the end 32 people were given the chance to attend. Sweden Alumni Network in China (SANC), in partnership with the Embassy of Sweden and the Swedish Institute is pleased to host a training session, which will focus on Cross-Cultural Communication Skills on Thursday, 12 March.
Effective Cross-Cultural Communication is becoming the new norm; given that today’s business environment spans numerous cultures by expanding to various regions and countries. Good Cross-Cultural Communication Skills make it easier to promote businesses to different geographic locations and work with different individuals productively and effectively.
