One of the famous “nicknames” of Stockholm is “Beauty on Water” or “Venice of the North”. Amazing palaces, spread around the archipelago, bring you to the epoch of Renaissance, inspire and charm visitors from a very beginning.
As a northern country, Sweden can show you an incredibly bright, picturesque winter, with “fluffy snow” shimmering in the sun, like thousands of tiny white crystals. And especially during winter – in anticipation of the New Year and Christmas – a completely unique atmosphere surrounds you here – in Stockholm.
A few weeks before Christmas season (which is celebrated in Sweden on the 25th of December) Stockholm “dresses” itself in colorful winter decorations: lights and illuminations cover all the streets in the city.
These days you can see funny figures and images of Tomtenisse – tiny little man from Scandinavian folklore with huge white beard and big red hat. Squares are occupied with traditional Christmas markets with presents and sweets for kids.
Everybody is in small rush on a street, trying to buy all gifts for friends and family.
And every 31th of December, just 5 minutes before the New Year’s midnight, Stockholm is lightened up by dozens of amazing flashes of fireworks, which allow you one more time to enjoy the view of the “Beauty on Water”.
