Reflections from Kampala

Most of last week was spent in Kampala, capital of Uganda, home to hundreds of Swedish Institute (SI) Alumni over the years.

Our first event after arrival was naturally to host the first alumni gathering in Uganda, arranged by the Swedish Embassy and co-hosted together with the Swedish Institute at the residence of the Swedish Ambassador to Uganda, Mr.Urban Andersson. SI:s Director General, Mrs Annika Rembe, attended the event and expressed the importance of continued Alumni relations and connections with Sweden. As Manager of SI:s Alumni relations, I was delighted that over 30 alumni currently in Uganda attened the event. SI Alumni can be found in a wide varuety of feilds as Professors, researchers or as professionals in private- or health sectors, some in financial investment, all gathered to network and revitalize their contacts with Sweden.

The focal point of our Second day in Uganda was “Sweden Day at Makerere University” in Kampala. We estimated that an overwhelming 1.300 students passed by the Sweden day venue all curious about studies and Scholarship opportunities to Sweden. During the day 6 SI Alumni who had just returned from Sweden joined us in discussion panels and shared their experience on studying in Sweden, they held two presentations on the topic of studying in Sweden, making a truly important contribution to our Sweden Day. Niklas Dahlberg, Program Manager for the “Study Scholarship programme” held a few presentations on scholarship opportunities in Sweden.

Alumni in Cambodia help recruit Scholarship holders

Last Tuesday, December 4th, the Swedish Embassy in Cambodia together with the Swedish Institute hosted the first Alumni event for former Swedish students.

Over 40 former students to Sweden attended the Alumni cocktail and were welcomed by the Swedish Ambassador, Ms. Anne Höglund, at her residence in Phnom Penh. Networking was high on the agenda!

Most of the alumni are former ITP exchange students who attended short term courses at KTH, Lund University, Gothenburg University, Uppsala University , to name a few Swedish Universities represented at the event. Many old and new friends met during the evening.

I was given the opportunity to highlight the importance of mutual value of alumni relations and the importance to keeping in touch, read more on the Embassy webbsite: Sweden abroad Cambodia.

Niklas Dahlberg, Program Manager for the SI Study Scholarships Program, shared information about the scholarship opportunities on Master’s level for Cambodian students. Cambodia is one of the 12 prioritized countries in this scholarship program but Si has received few applicants, our ambition now, is that the alumni and ITP scholars will help us spread the word. About 150 scholarships will be awarded and the applications for studies in Sweden opened on December 1st at www.universityadmissions.se

The rest of the week was spent in meetings with teachers at universities in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and Battambang to spread information about the scholarship opportunities for Cambodian students. More information about the SI scholarship program www.studyinsweden.se/scholarships

A big ‘Thank you’ to the Swedish Embassy and their staff, and of course to all the students that attended our seminars. We estimate that we held presentations to just about 2000 students during the tour in Cambodia.

Until next time…!
