INVITATION – SI alumni initiated events in Minsk, Belarus

About two months ago the Swedish Institute announced the possibility for SI alumni to apply for financial support to arrange local events, focusing on thematic areas of relevance for development in the Baltic Sea Region, which were:

  • Green technology and/or Energy efficiency
  • Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship
  • Management skills, Leadership and Networking
  • Employment and Career development
  • ICT and E-solutions

The announcement has resulted in a number of creative and highly professional applications from alumni teams, bringing together former scholarship holders, SI summer university participants, former  Swedish language students as well as representatives of Swedish Foreign Missions and Swedish and local experts in the abovementioned thematic areas.

While we are still waiting for several successful candidates to accept SI grants and sign the letters of agreement, two alumni teams from Belarus are already eager to welcome participants to their inspiring events next week.

I.  Effective Decision Making Workshop on Tuesday, October 15, 2013

Effective decision-making is a very important skill for businessmen, managers, team leaders and basically everyone who is eager to make a difference in life. But very few people have proper training and clear techniques on how to take effective decisions in different situations.

 At the event you will learn:

  • To take responsibility for decisions we make;
  • To actively seek effective ways of decision making;
  • To enhance self-appraisal and find self-reliance;
  • To have a critical frame of mind about factors that impede effective decision making;
  • To find ways out of critical situations;
  • To enjoy challenges and take advantages of failures.

II.  Interactive PR Workshop on Friday, October 18th, 2013

Who is the workshop designed for?

Professionals in business and development organisations, projects and initiatives, who are interested in improving their product’s or company’s publicity and coverage in mass media and social networks. Students, researchers, start-up owners, young entrepreneurs, PR and marketing specialists, and those who is interested in learning more about communications.

Announcement: The Swedish Institute offers support to arrange local SI alumni events in Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine

Are you a Swedish Instiute Alumni and interested in organizing a local alumni event in your country?

Today the Swedish Institute (SI) is pleased to announce the possibility for SI alumni (former scholarship and grant holders) to apply for financial support to arrange local events, focusing on thematic areas of relevance for development in the Baltic Sea Region. The idea of this call is to provide a limited start-up possibility for SI alumni who wish to stay active and continue building professional networks after their scholarships in Sweden. Events supported within this call must take place in Belarus, Georgia, Moldova or Ukraine, and be held in autumn 2013.

The grant can be used to arrange lectures, seminars, workshops, study visits and much more. It is the organizing team behind each application that outlines which components to include, and how it should be managed. It could also be a series of events together forming a larger program, covering different aspects and questions related to the topics discussed. The Swedish Institute recommends that any organizing team establishes collaboration with external partners, and if possible the Swedish embassy or consulate.

Events targeting any of the following thematic areas will have priority:

  • Green technology and/or Energy efficiency
  • Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship
  • Management skills, Leadership and Networking
  • Employment and Career development
  • ICT and E-solutions

Requirements and guidelines in brief:

Procedure for application: The completed application form, along with necessary enclosures must be sent by e-mail to si@si.se

Application period: August 15, 2013, open until September 15, 2013

Organizing team: At least three team members (more information available in the application instructions)

Event location: The event must take place in Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, or Ukraine

Date of event: To be held no later than January 31, 2014

An event must include at least 10 SI alumni, together representing one or several of the categories below. The Swedish Institute, however recommends that an event gathers 20 participants or more, in order to ensure interesting networking possibilities and sharing of ideas/experiences.

SI Alumni arranging local alumni events

We have now granted 7 SI Alumni the opportunity to prepare and host  5 alumni seminars for SI Alumni in Belarus and 2 courses. These Alumni have studied in Sweden with either a scholarship within the Visby Program or a scholarship for studies in a Swedish Folk High School. The announcement targeted at SI Alumni in Belarus was published in December and generated fantastic applications from Belarusian Alumni eager to organize local events. 

Below is a breif discribtion of the seminars and courses being planned and the final dates will be posted here.  Swedish speaking Alumni in Belarus will have the opportunity to participate in two courses organized by the SI Alumni  and the Swedish language teachers.

March From Creative Education to Successful Business. A series of business workshops and a seminar, organized together with the State Institute of Management and Social Technologies of the Belarusian State University.  Si Alumni,  Volha
April Decent Jobs in Belarus – What is the Strategy to Become Self-/employed? Workshop on career planning, focusing on knowledge-sharing among participants, and the current employment situation in Belarus contrasted against the possibility to become self-employed and starting up own ventures.  Si Alumni Aliaksei
April Leadership & Management in Belarus: Transition From Formality to Skill Mastering Forum for discussions on how to develop leadership and management skills in the context of changing conditions. Are you an Alumni and interested in organising an Alumni event?

This might just be for you! For the first time we are offering our Belarusian SI Alumni the opportunity to apply for funding for local alumni events.

This call is meant to support bottom-up-initiated get-togethers in Belarus, exclusively held for Swedish Institute Alumni. The event should have a thematic approach and could include several components, together forming a program such as:  “Green technology and Energy efficiency”, “Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship” or “Modern leadership and Management skills” to name a few. The event could be an expert seminar on a topic and/or an interactive workshop rounded off by a small reception/fika.

The ambition of the events are to strengthen platforms for professional networking, start-up of mentorship and highlighting experiences of relevance for the topics discussed. Still interested?

Guidelines in brief:

Application is open until 31st December 2012
The event should take place in Belarus no later than the 30th of April 2013.
We encourage applications to collaborate will external partners (e.g. NGOs, universities, the Centre for Swedish Studies in Minsk)
Include at least 10 alumni, together representing at least two of the following categories:

  • Former Swedish Institute scholarship holders
  • SI Management Program North Europe alumni
  • Previous participants of the Swedish Institute Summer University
  • Former students of Swedish language at universities and the Centre for Swedish Studies in Belarus
