More than 400 SI scholarship holders complete their scholarship period this year and become part of the SI Alumni Network. There are now more than 10,000 SI alumni! On October 3 of 2014 the first event organized for an alumni from the Swedish Institute was held in La Paz, Bolivia. The event: Seminar in Green Chemistry and Alternative Energies: Experiences and Future Perspectives, joined researchers from the main Universities of Bolivia: University San Andres and University San Simón and had as a key speaker Prof. Rajni Hatti Kaul head of Department of Biotechnology from Lund University-Sweden, who came especially for this event. We were glad to see that people from industry, academia and government present at the event. The event which was initially planned for 50 persons, but the interest make us increased in a 50% this number making a final of 76 interested in the topic, overcoming the expectations of the organizers. The arrangement for this seminar was lead by Ms. Georgina Chavez, SI Alumni from Bolivia.

On August 14, chargé d’affaires Karin Wallensteen invited new SI scholarship holders to a pre-departure event at the Swedish Residence.
During the evening, Ethiopians who have previously studied at Swedish universities shared their experiences of life in the north and good-humouredly reported on getting used to snow and ice, queuing, differences in teaching and learning methods as well as using public transport. The contact person of the Swedish Alumni Association in Ethiopia, Dawit Mazengia invited the students to join the association on coming back to Ethiopia.

As the Ramadan month has commenced, Muslims in Indonesia observe the Fast of Ramadan. During this month, one will usually get lots of invitations to break the fast together and attend a small gathering. It’s very common that these invitations are extended to the non-Muslims as well.
Alumni Swedia in Indonesia also organised a small break fast gathering combined with informal pre-departure sharing session for future students who will study in Swedish universities. The event took place on July 10, 2014 at Bumbu Desa Pasaraya Blok M, South of Jakarta with 22 attendees.
Not much of food, a lot of sharing :-)
